Curriculum Overview 





Our academic program includes the following:


Reading
Open Court Reading is taught using multiple strategies including cooperative learning and one-to-one tutoring. Phonics, word attack, comprehension, and study skills are taught through literature. Students are tested quarterly through the Dibels or SRI reading assessments.
90 minutes daily

Writing
Step-Up to Writing incorporates writing for many purposes and audiences. As students become more fluent writers, they hone the mechanics of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
45 minutes daily

Mathematics
Everyday Mathematics curriculum stresses computation as well as a full range of mathematics including data collection and analysis, probability and statistics, geometry, and algebra.
60 minutes daily

Social Studies
Edison Social Science is a project-based program which emphasizes the use of children's literature to instruct the students. Projects and activities are often cross-curricular and are guided by a multicultural perspective and respect for diversity.
45 minutes daily

Science
Delta Science and FOSS Science engages students in hands-on explorations, which builds their understanding of the key scientific concepts and big ideas that explain our world.
45 minutes daily

Spanish- World Language
Spanish skills are acquired by the students through learning conversation and about the culture, with the long-term goal of being able to communicate fluently.
45 minutes on alternating days

Music and Visual Arts
Music and visual arts are presented as a combination of history, performance, appreciation, and practice, all with a multicultural approach.

Physical Fitness/Health
The physical fitness/health curriculum focuses on healthful nutrition and developmentally appropriate objectives in the areas of speed, flexibility, endurance, strength, and agility.

Holt Reading
is a literature-based reading program where students will learn to master a variety of strategies and skills through competitive enriched lessons while engrossed in classical and contemporary literature. This program provides interactive comprehensive activities that reinforce fluency and reading strategies in each selection.

Mathematics
Prentice Hall Mathematics
Course 1 and Course 2 curriculum encompasses multiple numeration, data and probability, geometric and spatial, and algebraic relationship skills needed for success in Pre-Algebra.
Prentice Hall Pre-Algebra curriculum provides students with math concept skills to promote academic success in Algebra.

Science
Middle School Science provides a foundation for students to learn science using new innovative technology to make connections to real life features of everyday life. Students can become actively involved in the text to extend their understanding by cooperatively working with others to develop creative scientific discoveries.

Social Studies
Middle School Social Studies uses a research-based reading curriculum to teach students world history while preparing them to research and generate a deeper understanding of past mysteries and historical events.

Middle School American History instruction engages students in the study of history by teaching democratic ideas and civic values. Social studies skills such as: topography, researching historical events, geography, civic duty, and the shaping of a democracy are integrated throughout the curriculum.
