State Test Results: Confluence is One of the Top Performing Charter Schools in the City
Students Achieve AYP in Mathematics

Recent test results from Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education show that Confluence Academy continues to be one of the top performing charter schools in the City of St. Louis and is outpacing both St. Louis Public Schools and the State of Missouri in its progress on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP). Confluence posted district-wide gains of 15.5 and 9.1 percentage points in the number of students scoring proficient or advanced in mathematics and communication arts respectively. The increase in the mathematics scores resulted in students achieving average yearly progress or AYP in mathematics for 2010. “It is gratifying to see this level of academic growth, especially in a state that ranks third in the nation for academic standards,” says Jeff Edmison, Regional General Manager for Edison Learning, which is the education management company for Confluence Academy.

Confluence met its AYP target in mathematics by posting an 87.10% gain over the previous year’s test scores. In communication arts, it had a 47.21% increase. AYP is part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. It states that all schools, districts and states are required to show that students are making average yearly progress. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education established Missouri’s AYP targets. They are based on a formula from the No Child Left Behind Act and an analysis of Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) standardized test data, attendance rate data and graduation rate data from prior years. When all targets are met, the requirements of AYP are met. “Enhancing performance in urban education is a marathon, not a sprint,” says Board Chairman Craig Glover. “We began our investment in this process in 2003 and it is gratifying to see the progress that is being made.”

For the same time period from Spring 2009 to Spring 2010, Confluence had a 15.5 percentage point increase in mathematics compared to St. Louis Public Schools, which had a 7.3 increase and the State of Missouri 5.1. In communication arts, Confluence had a 9.1 percentage point increase compared to 3.2 for St. Louis Public Schools and 2.4 for the State of Missouri.
